The Chairman of International Lawyers Forum (ILF), Nasir Ahmed has congratulated to Wilton Gregory who appointed as new Cardinal among 13 Roman Catholic Cardinals, the first African-American clergyman.
ILF Chairman hoped that Cardinal Wilton will now try to control all the conflicts particularly racism and supremacism across the world because of his personal expertise, experiences, skills, cast, creed and cultural characteristics and brilliant background. He also invited Wilton to visit South Asia.
In a ‘message of congratulation’ released from ILF’s Secretariat, Chairman said that the Pope Frances announced the 13 cardinals from eight nations in a surprise address from his window overlooking St Peter’s Square in Rome on Sunday.
Wilton Daniel Gregory, the progressive 72-year-old Archbishop of Washington DC, will be one of them.
The cardinals will be installed in a ceremony at the Vatican on 28 November.
Cardinals are the most senior clergymen in the Roman Catholic Church below the pontiff.
ILF message reads that an ordained priest since the age of 25, he became Washington’s archbishop in May 2019. He replaced Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who resigned amid criticism of his handling of abuse cases.
In the US, Archbishop Gregory has been a prominent voice in the effort to root out abuse within the Church. As president of the US bishops’ conference, he persuaded Church leaders to adopt tougher penalties for abusers in 2002.
Welcoming Cardinal Wilton, ILF’s congratulation message further reads that the resolve to promote inter-faith harmony and respect for all religions to make the world a revered destination for the followers of all religions and conveyed the common memo of peace, harmony and understanding among all religions.
